Angel Gutierrez is interested in illustration, motion, and publication design. They love anything that is intensely poetic & a little bit absurd. You can usually find them at a used book store, or at home with their fluffy white dog. In their own time, they self publish their own poetry, fiction, and comics.

Archive & Alchemy

An interactive card deck for getting work done. Pull from the archive, become inspired, & let the magic of creation unfold!

Archive and Alchemy consists of I: The Alchemist’s Secret’s, and II: The Archive. The Alchemist’s secrets offer prompts under three main categories, The Study, The Solution, and The Making, while The Archive consists of words (Verbum), images (Imago), and abstract phrases (Actio) as materials for the Alchemist to help generate new ideas.

My goals when creating Archive and Alchemy was to locate what helps me create, which is inspiration, and to dive deeper into the media that I’ve been saving in my own personal archive, bringing it forward through these interactive cards in a very tangible way. I was fascinated by the idea that creation is a sort of alchemy, the ability to find meaning in abstract ideas and to create conceptual connections across distances, generating something new from something that has been laid down somewhere else.

I wanted this card deck to embody this feeling, referencing historic European alchemy and esoteric design, from diagrams, to symbology, to Tarot. Archive and Alchemy exist as an arcane mysticism of lost artifacts, renewed as the cards prompt the magic of creation to unfold.
